During the operation of a hard disk, logical errors may occur in its file system, and physical defects on the surface. You can identify problem sectors using Windows tools and third-party programs.
Instructions
Step 1
Open the "My Computer" icon by double clicking. Call the drop-down menu by clicking on the logical disk icon with the right mouse button. Select "Properties" and go to the "Service" tab.
Step 2
In the "Check Disk" section, click "Check". In the new window, check the boxes "Automatically fix errors" and "Check and repair sectors". Click Start. Perhaps the system will inform you that it is not possible to start the scan at the moment, and will offer to check the disk after rebooting. Answer yes.
Step 3
You can run the scan in other ways. In the "Control Panel" double-click on the "Computer Management" icon and in the window of the control console start the "Disk Management" snap-in. In a new window, open the drop-down menu by right-clicking on the logical disk icon and select the "Properties" option.
Step 4
Call the program launch window with the Win + R hotkeys and enter the cmd command. On the command line, write chkdsk disk_name: / f / r, where disk_name is the drive letter, for example, c: or d: The / f / r switches perform a full check of the disk - file system and physical surface state.
Step 5
The system will display a message about the impossibility to start the scan at the moment and will offer to do it after restarting. Click "Yes" if verification is required.
Step 6
After an incorrect shutdown (for example, a power outage) after turning on the computer, the chkdsk utility starts independently and offers to check the file system. If you are sure that the disk does not need to be checked, press any key to load the operating system.
Step 7
You can use third-party programs such as MHDD to check the disc. Download it from the developer's site as a boot disk image. Check out the help documentation located on the same site. After starting and setting the parameters, the program will very accurately determine the state of the disk and repair some bad sectors.
