Step 1
It is quite easy to create an image of the operating system without resorting to the help of third-party programs. Open the start menu and go to the control panel. Select the "System and Security" menu. Find the "Backup and Restore" submenu and open it.

In the left column, find the item "Create a system image". Go to it. In the next window, select a location to save the image file. Ideally, this file should be stored on an external hard drive. This will increase the likelihood of its safety, because DVDs can be scratched and the hard drive in use can deteriorate.
Step 3
Click the Next button after selecting the storage location. A window will open with a list of disks to be backed up. Click the "Archive" button to start the process.
Step 4
In order to successfully use the system image, you must have a dedicated disk on hand. Return to the Backup and Restore menu. Proceed to Create System Restore Disc. Insert the DVD into your drive and click the Create Disc button. The function of this disk can be performed by a regular Windows 7 installation disk.
Step 5
Try to create an operating system archive using the capabilities of the Partition Manager utility. Install this program and restart your computer. Start Partition Manager. Open the "Wizards" tab and go to the "Archive Disk or Partition" menu.
Step 6
Click the "Next" button and specify the local disk partition where the operating system is installed. Working with Windows Vista and Seven, it is recommended to include an additional bootable system partition in the future archive.
Step 7
Click the "Next" button and select the storage location for the future archive. Click the Next button three times. To apply the specified parameters, click the "Finish" button. To start the process of creating a system archive, click the "Apply pending changes" button.
