Creating a virtual hard disk is a convenient solution to many tasks, for example, storing information in encrypted form. This operation can be carried out using the standard tools of the operating system using the "Computer Management" utility.
Instructions
Step 1
To create a virtual hard disk on your system, follow these steps. Right-click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop and select "Manage". After that, in the list that appears, right-click on the "Disk Management" section and select "Create virtual hard disk".
Step 2
In the window that opens, specify the settings for the hard disk being created. Click on the browse button, select the folder where the virtual hard disk file will be stored, give it a name and click the "Save" button. Set the size of the disk. Select the units of measurement: megabytes, gigabytes, or terabytes, and then enter a numerical value in the corresponding field. Next, choose one of two hard disk formats: dynamic expansion or fixed size.
Step 3
If you opt for dynamic expansion, the file size of the hard disk will gradually increase with the addition of new files to the specified maximum. Deleting data will not automatically resize. If you stop at the second option, the hard disk file size will initially be equal to the maximum specified in the settings. It is recommended to choose a fixed size. After that click on the OK button.
Step 4
A new virtual disk will appear in the system. Right-click on it in the "Computer Management" utility window and select "Initialize Disk". In the window that appears, select the required disk, and also click on the "Master Boot Record (MBR-Master Boot Record)". Then click OK.
Step 5
To work with the virtual hard disk, create a new partition on it. To do this, right-click on the unallocated area of the disk and select "Create Simple Volume". Click "Next", then set the desired letter for the drive, select the type of file system, specify the volume label and check the box next to "Quick format". Complete the simple volume creation process.
