Not every program is capable of recognizing all types of profile files, which is why the user often has to change the extension of the latter. Let's consider how to change the extension of a file in the two most popular operating systems: Windows 7 and Windows XP

Step 1
Let's start with Windows 7. Of course, the easiest and most effective way in all operating systems is to rename a file in a file manager. For example, Total Commander. But if you don't have one, the problem can still be dealt with. We consistently perform the following actions.

Open any window of the Windows 7 file manager, press the Alt key.

Intermediate Result: A menu should appear: File, Edit, Tools, etc.
Select "Tools", in it "Folder Options".

In the drop-down window, go to the "View" tab.
Uncheck the box next to "Hide extensions for registered file types."
