There are many interesting collections of icons on the Internet. If you decide to take advantage of them and replace the icons on your desktop, you need to know which components to work with so that everything goes well.

Instructions

Step 1

If the collection of new icons was packed into a RAR or ZIP file, unpack the archive into the directory where the new icons will be stored. Afterwards, do not change the location of the folder with icons, otherwise your settings will be lost.

Step 2

Make sure the decompressed files are in.ico format. If the extension of the files is different, use the converter (Icon Converter, Icon to Any). These applications work on a similar principle: in one field you put files in graphics format, in the second you get files with the.ico extension.

Step 3

Go to your desktop and right-click on the folder you want to change the icon of. In the context menu, select "Properties", a new dialog box will open. Make the "Settings" tab active and click on the "Change Icon" button in the "Folder Icons" group. For shortcuts - the "Shortcut" tab and the "Change Icon" button.

Step 4

In the additional window, click on the "Browse" button and specify the path to the folder where your collection of icons is stored. To select a suitable icon from the list, it is better to turn on the "Page thumbnail" mode - so the icons will be displayed in full size. Having found a suitable icon, click on it with the left mouse button and click on the "Open" button. Apply the new settings.

Step 5

The icons for the Trash / Empty, My Computer, My Network Places, and My Computer folders change differently. Open the Display component. To do this, select "Control Panel" from the "Start" menu and click on the "Display" icon in the "Appearance and Themes" category. Alternatively, right-click anywhere on the desktop and select Properties from the drop-down menu.

Step 6

Open the "Desktop" tab and click on the "Customize Desktop" button. In the additional window, go to the "General" tab and select in the "Desktop Icons" group the thumbnail of the item whose icon you want to change. Click on the "Change icon" button, specify the path to the new icon and apply the new settings.
