For convenience, the size of a TV or monitor screen is indicated by the length of its diagonal - this allows you to indicate the size with just one number. It so happened that this number is expressed most often in inches, which are not used in most countries that have adopted the metric system of measurements. In Russia, too, length is measured in centimeters, but screen sizes are still expressed in inches.
Instructions
Step 1
If you also believed your school teacher, the diagonal of a rectangle is the segment between its opposite corners, passing through the center of the figure. Measure this section of the rectangular screen of your monitor or TV. The tool can be a centimeter, measuring ruler, meter or other tool at hand that can be used without fear of damaging the surface of the picture tube or matrix.
Step 2
And if from school you also remembered the Pythagorean theorem, then you can do even more tricky - measure the length and width instead of the diagonal, and calculate the required value by extracting the root from the sum of squares of the values obtained. Sometimes the use of this method is preferable, since it guarantees the safety of the surface of the picture tube or matrix.
Step 3
The number obtained in the previous steps must be converted to inches. Usually, these are the units that indicate the screen size, so it is most likely that you also need it in these units. Each inch contains approximately 2.54 cm, so divide the length of the diagonal measured in centimeters by this value.
Step 4
It makes sense to make measurements only when simpler methods are not available. For example, almost always on the case of a device with a screen, you can find a marking in which one of the numbers indicates the diagonal size. For example, if SyncMaster 2232BW is indicated on the monitor, the first two digits in the numerical designation indicate the size of the diagonal in inches. If you need to know the diagonal in centimeters, perform the opposite mathematical operation applied in the previous step - multiply 22 by 2, 54.
Step 5
The diagonal of the monitor screen by the numbers in its name can be determined without even inspecting the case. If the computer is turned on and the operating system is configured correctly, then the full name along with numbers can be seen by opening the display settings. In Windows 7 and Vista, just right-click on the desktop and select "Screen Resolution". The full name of the monitor can be found in the "Screen" line of the window that opens.
