But this is often necessary, including for everyday work with text editors or games, since the installation of many programs requires knowledge of the bit depth to select the desired version of the product.

Step 1
Look at the amount of RAM on your personal computer. To do this, right-click on the "Desktop" on the "My Computer" icon and select "Properties". A window will appear where you can see the amount of RAM. This is the most commonplace way to determine the capacity of the system. And it consists in the following. If you bought a computer relatively recently and ordered a powerful enough package, for example, to have 8GB of RAM, then your operating system is definitely 64-bit, since 32-bit supports up to a maximum of 3GB of RAM.
Step 2
Click on the "Start" button and start the "Run" operation. In the dialog box that appears, enter sysdm.cpl and click "OK". After that, in the dialog box that appears, select the "General" tab. There you will see an inscription setting the bitness of the operating system. For example, Windows XP Home Edition x64. This means that your system is 64-bit.
Step 3
There is an alternative way. Do everything the same, i.e. click the "Start" button, then - "Run", but this time in the dialog box write winmsd.exe. You will see another window in which you need to select the "Type" tab. If the system is 32-bit, then you will see the inscription: "Computer based on x86". If the system is 64-bit, then the inscription will be like this: "Computer based on Intanium".
Step 4
If you are the proud owner of the operating system Windows Vista or Windows 7, then to determine the bitness of the system, follow these steps. The sequence of actions is the same. Click "Start", then "Run". In the dialog box, write the word "system". In the window that appears, select the "system" item. A detailed description of the system will appear, where you can see the bitness of your operating system.
