The paging file (virtual memory) helps speed up the computer a little and acts as a buffer for storing temporary data, providing quick access to it. It is also designed to unload the RAM, but in no case replace it, since the speed of the hard disk is much slower. At the same time, many applications do not work correctly without using a paging file.

Instructions

Step 1

In order to enter the virtual memory settings, make one right-click on the "My Computer" icon, then go to "Properties" in the pop-up context menu. In the window that appears at the top, find the "Advanced" tab. It is also worth paying attention to the fact that depending on the version of Windows you have installed, this tab may be located on the left side of the window and be called "Advanced system settings".

Step 2

Then left-click on "Parameters" in the "Performance" item. Then, in the "Performance Settings" window that appears, click "Advanced", then in the tab that opens, find the "Paging file" item (also referred to as "Virtual memory") and click on the "Change" button.

Step 3

Select the local disk for which you want to set the paging file and check the box next to "Custom size", then enter the required virtual memory size. Please note that both fields must be completed and the original size cannot be larger than the maximum. Also, do not set the paging file size lower than the system recommended. After setting the value, the paging file will start.

Step 4

If for some reason you cannot get into this menu in the first way, then take these steps. Call the "Start" menu, then go to the "Control Panel", where find the "System" icon. A window will open in which select the "Advanced" item, then follow the steps starting from the second step.

Step 5

When choosing the size of the paging file, you can check the box "System selectable". In this case, the system will set the minimum swap file size for your PC configuration. It is highly not recommended to completely disable virtual memory ("Without paging file"), as this leads to a drop in operating system performance.
