Icons allow you to understand at a glance what type a particular file belongs to. This is very convenient, but in some cases the owner of the computer may want to change them. The procedure for replacing icons is quite easy and accessible to any user.

Step 1
The need to replace an icon occurs relatively rarely - most often in a situation when some new program has changed the icon of the file you are interested in. The program can be removed, but the changed icon remains. In this case, it must be replaced.
Step 2
Choose the icon you need if you do not want to use those that are in the operating system. Create a separate folder for the icons and place the found pictures in it.

If you are on Windows XP, open any folder. Find the Tools tab in the menu, select Folder Options. Go to the File Types tab and find the AVI files icon in the list.
Step 4
Highlight the found icon and click the "Advanced" button. In the window that opens, click the "Change icon" button. Now you can choose another icon from the existing ones or install your own. In the latter case, click the "Browse" button, open the folder with your pictures and select the icon file. Save your changes by clicking OK.
Step 5
When using the Windows 7 operating system, changing the icons will not work just as easily. This can be done only through editing the registry or using special utilities. It is not worth editing the registry unless absolutely necessary, so it is better to use third-party tools - for example, the Default Programs Editor program.
Step 6
Download and run the Default Programs Editor. Please note that for it to work, you need the installed NET Framework 3.5, if it is missing, a corresponding warning will appear. When the program window opens, select Icon to replace the icon. The replacement itself is simple and intuitive - you just need to select the icon to replace and specify a new one.
Step 7
The Tune Up Utilities program can also help in changing the icons. With its help, you can not only change the appearance of Windows, but also perform many other settings. The program is easy to use, there is a Russian version.
