If your existing wireless router in your home or office is not able to cover the entire premises, the way out of this situation may be to install a second router, which will expand the range of the network. Not all routers have "bridging" or wireless repeater capabilities, so check the manufacturer's documentation before purchasing.
Instructions
Step 1
Look around the room carefully, choosing a location for the most suitable location for the routers. Depending on your layout, you may want to place one device at one end of the house and the other at the other end. Keep in mind that the main router must be close to a telephone or cable jack to access the Internet.
Step 2
Select a new router after making sure it is capable of bridging. This information should be contained in the manufacturer's description or user manual. If you have already purchased a router that does not have bridge mode, go to the manufacturer's support website and see if there are any firmware updates that will add this capability. If your router is in bridge mode, then you can replace it with a new one without this capability, and then use your old router as a bridge.
Step 3
Set up your primary router and connect it to the Internet according to the manufacturer's instructions. Refer to the documentation for the second router to find out what information you need on the first router. Make a note of the encryption method used by the primary router (WPA2 or WPA).
Step 4
Make a note of the IP address of the primary router, for example, "192.168.0.1" and the subnet mask, for example, "255.255.255.0".
Step 5
Connect your computer to your router using an Ethernet cable.
Step 6
Enter the IP address of your router in your browser search bar, for example "192.168.0.1". Enter your username and password (the default is usually "admin" and "admin").
Step 7
If your router is capable of operating in Wireless Repeater mode, select it. Choose the same encryption method as your primary route. Click the Apply Button.
Step 8
Select "Bridge Mode" as the Internet connection type. When the router asks you for an IP address, enter the first three digits as the router's primary IP address and change the last number. For example, if the primary IP address of the router is "192.168.0.1", you can use "192.168.0.12" as the second IP address of the router. Use the same subnet mask as your primary router, for example "255.255.255.0." Click the Apply Button.
Step 9
Save changes, and then disconnect your computer from the router.
