If it becomes necessary to add a new branch or key to the Windows system registry, then this can be done either in a completely manual mode or using auxiliary files. A standard registry editor from the base programs of the operating system will help to cope with all possible options for completing the registry.
Instructions
Step 1
Start the registry editor using the shortcut "My Computer" on the desktop or the item "Computer" in the main menu - right-clicking on it brings up the context menu, which contains the desired item ("Registry Editor").
Step 2
Back up the registry before you start making changes to it. To do this, use the "Export" item in the "File" section of the editor menu - select it, and then enter the file name, specify the backup storage location and click the "Save" button.
Step 3
If you have a file in which information is saved in text form to be added to the HKEY_USERS or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry keys, then first select one of them in the left pane, and then open the File section in the application menu and select the Load hive line. Using the dialog that opens, find and open the required file.
Step 4
If you have a reg-file with information to be entered into the register, recorded in accordance with the standard established for such files, then select the "Import" line in the same section of the editor menu. In the dialog box, find and open this file. Information from files with the reg extension can be added to the registry without this application - just double-click on the file icon in Explorer or on the desktop, and then confirm the operation.
Step 5
If there are no files, then go to the section where you need to make changes. By right-clicking on the free space, open the context menu, and in it go to the "Create" section. Depending on what exactly you want to add to the current registry branch, select either the "Key" line or one of the five variable types listed there.
Step 6
Enter the name of the created branch or key and press enter. If a variable was created, then right-click its line and select the "Change" item in the context menu. As a result, a form will open with a set of fields related to this type of variable - fill it out and click OK.
Step 7
Close the registry editor when you are finished editing.
