There are special programs for composing crossword puzzles that greatly facilitate the user's work. But if you are not going to constantly create puzzles, crosswords and rebuses, or if you cannot install such a program and understand its interface, you can use Microsoft Office Excel or Word applications to compile the grid of the crossword puzzle.
Instructions
Step 1
If you choose to use Word, create a table. To do this, open the "Insert" tab and in the "Tables" group click on the "Table" thumbnail button. In the context menu, select the "Insert Table" command. A new dialog box will open. Enter values for columns and rows in the appropriate fields. In this case, focus on the maximum number of lines (future cells of the crossword puzzle) from the right to the left edge and the number of columns from the top to the bottom of the crossword puzzle.
Step 2
Set the height and width to the cells of the crossword puzzle. To do this, select the created table and right-click on the selection. In the context menu, select the "Table Properties" item. A new dialog box will open. Make the "Row" tab active in it and enter a value in the "Height" field. Click the Column tab and enter the same value in the Width field. Click the OK button to save the settings and close the window.
Step 3
Place in the table the words that are the answers to the crossword puzzle by entering one letter in one cell. On the Table Tools context menu, open the Design tab and select the Eraser tool in the Draw Borders block. Erase the extra cells or edges in your crossword puzzle with this tool.
Step 4
It is a little easier to compose a crossword puzzle in Microsoft Office Excel, since the Excel sheet already looks like a table. To set the lines to a suitable height, move the mouse cursor to the ordinal numbers of the lines, the cursor will change its appearance. Press the left mouse button and, while holding it, select the range you need.
Step 5
Click on the selection with the right mouse button and select "Row Height" from the context menu. A new window will open, enter the desired value in it. In the same way, set the appropriate width for the columns, making a selection by their letter names. To mark the cells of the crossword puzzle, open the "Home" tab and use the "Border" tool from the "Font" block.
