The file name is part of its address, i.e. the specific coordinates of the location on the hard drive where it is stored. The name must be unique for a specific directory. It is possible that there are two files with the same name but different formats in the same folder. To make it immediately clear what kind of file it is, you need to assign it a name that would reflect its contents as much as possible. You can change the file name when this file is not in use, i.e. not opened by a program for editing or viewing.
Instructions
Step 1
Make sure the file is not in use by any application. To do this, look at the desktop panel, where tabs of open programs are displayed, or start the task manager. Press the following keyboard shortcut in sequence: Ctrl + Alt + Delete. Then, in the window that appears, open the "Applications" tab. The list of used applications should not include the name of the file that you are going to fix. If this file is in use, click on it once with the left mouse button, then click the "End task" button. Please note that such a closing method will undo all changes that were made to the file, provided that you did not have time to save them before. Therefore, if you want to save the data entered in the file, save it first.
Step 2
Find the folder containing the file you are interested in. To do this, go to "Explorer" and go to the appropriate directory. Enter the folder. Select the file by clicking on it with the left mouse button. Then, to correct the name of the file, right-click on it. In the menu that appears, select "Rename". This operation can be done differently. Select the file by clicking on it with the left mouse button, then press the F2 button on the keyboard. The file name field will be available for correction. Enter a new name. Remember not to use punctuation marks such as quotes, commas, periods, backslashes, etc. Do not give the file the name of an existing file of the same type.
Step 3
Double click on the file with the left mouse button. This will also lead to the ability to correct the file name. Do not change the names of the system files, this may cause the software to malfunction. When changing the file name, do not change its extension, i.e. the part that comes after the point.
