Unfortunately, in order to change the format of an audio file, it is not enough to change the extension in its name. This requires an application that can decode the audio fragment placed in the file in accordance with the format used when recording it, and then encode the sound in accordance with the new format and save it to a file with a different extension.
Necessary
Format Factory converter software
Instructions
Step 1
Choose a program that can read and save sound files in the source and destination formats you want. Such applications are called "converters" and it is not difficult to find them on the Internet. For example, this could be the free Format Factory software from Softonic. You can download it from this page on the company's server - https://format-factory.en.softonic.com/download?ptn=ff. After downloading the archive weighing 40 megabytes, extract and run the only file it contains. The installation wizard will ask just one question, install the application on your computer and add the necessary commands to the standard operating system file manager.
Step 2
You don't need to run Format Factory to start converting. Open the file manager - in Windows it is "Explorer" and it is launched, for example, by pressing the Win + E key combination. In the window of this application, navigate to the desired file and right-click it. If the file to be converted is on the desktop, it can be done without the "Explorer". In the pop-up context menu, you will find two items added there during the installation of the program - Media-file Info and Format Factory. The first one brings up a window with detailed information about the current file format, and the second one starts the conversion process - select it.
Step 3
In the window that opens, select the line of the required format in the list of twelve available options. Click on the "Indicator" button if you want to change the default conversion quality. This button will open another window with a list of three items - "High", "Medium", "Low". Select the quality you want and click OK.
Step 4
In the Destination folder field, specify where to save the file in the new format by choosing one of the suggested options or by entering your own. Then click OK, and the dialog box will close, placing the task you created for converting the file into the general list in the main program window. Before starting the process, you can perform the described preparatory operation with other files, increasing the list of tasks.
Step 5
Then click on the "Start" button and the application will start working. When the conversion is complete, a file will be created in a new format, which Format Factory will notify with a sound signal and a separate window with information about the elapsed time - it will pop up from the notification area of the taskbar for a few seconds.
