Shortcuts to documents and applications on the Windows desktop are used to quickly launch them. With these icons, you can perform the same operations as with files in Explorer - the functioning of all elements of the desktop is provided by this system application. As in the Explorer window, you can select or deselect one or a group of icons on the desktop. But sometimes a certain combination of settings for the appearance of desktop elements is mistaken for highlighting shortcuts.
Instructions
Step 1
Left-click on the background image on the desktop - this action is quite enough to deselect one, as well as all icons located on the desktop at once. In this case, the background of the labels of the labels should become transparent. If the selection is cleared, and the color fill under the captions remains, then the reason lies in the corresponding settings for displaying desktop elements.
Step 2
Activate the context menu on the Windows XP desktop by right-clicking on the background image. Select "Properties" in it and in the window that opens, click the "Desktop" tab. Click the "Customize Desktop" button, and in the next window that opens with the title "Desktop Elements" select the "Web" tab. Here you need to uncheck the box next to the "Freeze desktop elements", as well as all the checkboxes in the lines of the "Web pages" list. After that, close the settings windows by clicking the "OK" buttons in them. In this way, you will eliminate one of the possible causes of the seeming highlighting of shortcuts on the desktop in Windows XP.
Step 3
Open the context menu of the "My Computer" icon by right-clicking on it, and then select the "Properties" line. You can do this through the main OS menu on the "Start" button - having opened it, right-click the "Computer" button and select the same "Properties" line. Or you can use the hotkeys Win + Pause Break. Any of these actions opens the System Properties component. Click the Advanced tab, and then click the Options button in the Performance section. In the field "Special effects" set the checkbox, and in the list of effects find the line "Casting shadows with icons on the desktop" and put a checkbox in its checkbox. Then click the "OK" button - this will eliminate another possible reason for the imaginary highlighting of the desktop icons.

Open the main menu of the system, select the link "Control Panel" in it and click the inscription "Accessibility". Then click on "Adjust text contrast and screen color" and uncheck the "High contrast" box, if it is set there. Fix another cause of the desktop shortcut illusion by clicking OK.
