The name of the local network is set when it is created or when the operating system first detects a network connection the next time the computer is turned on. Once the name has been set, you can later change it - this feature is provided in Windows 7 and is very simple to implement.

Instructions

Step 1

You can get to the form with the field for changing the network name through one of the Windows 7 Control Panel applets. To launch the panel, open the OS main menu and select the item with its name in the right column. In the "Network and Internet" section of the panel, click on the link "View network status and tasks", and the required applet will appear on the screen.

Step 2

This applet can be launched in several other ways. For example, hover your mouse over the network connection icon in the lower right corner of the taskbar and left-click on it. In the pop-up window to launch the necessary applet, there is a link "Network and Sharing Center" - click on it with the left button too. And if you have Explorer open, the same can be done through the context menu of the Network object - it is invoked by clicking the right mouse button. Select Properties from the menu and the desired Control Panel will launch.

Step 3

In the Network and Sharing Center applet, the right side is divided into several sections. The second one from the top has a subheading "View active networks" and contains an icon, a name and an indication of the network type in the left column. To edit the name, left-click on the icon. The required form will appear in a separate window.

Step 4

In the "Share Name" field, replace the old name with the new one. If necessary, in the same form, you can change the icon used to display the network. To do this, click the "Change" button and select the most appropriate icon from the set that opens. If nothing worthwhile is found there, you can click the "Browse" button and search for pictures in other dynamic libraries (extension dll), executable files (exe), icon files (ico) or pictures of graphic formats (bmp, gif, jpg, png, etc..).

Step 5

Click OK to complete the operation, and then close Control Panel.
