Instructions
Step 1
Find the statistics on the composition of the population, on the basis of which you are going to draw up the age and sex pyramid. Population census data can serve as such information. However, in this case, you will not be able to draw up a chart showing the state of the population in the year when the census was not taken. Although this may be quite enough to trace the dynamics present in the age and sex composition of a city, settlement, region, etc.
Step 2
Write down all the important information from the documents found. This includes the gender and date of birth of the inhabitants. This is necessary in order not to be distracted by unnecessary information and to facilitate the further process of drawing up the diagram.
Step 3
Take a piece of paper and draw a normal coordinate system on it. In the center on the ordinate, write the years. As a rule, their number corresponds to the average life expectancy of the population. You can expand the list a little to reflect the long-livers in the pyramid.
Step 4
Write in front of each year the number of people born during this period and now living. This will allow you to fix the gender and age composition that is taking place at the moment. As you enter this information, please note that women are listed on the right and men on the left. Keep in mind that one cell represents one year.
Step 5
To make the pyramid more visual, you can transfer the results obtained to a computer program that allows you to work with diagrams. For example, in Microsoft Word, Excel or Power Point.
Step 6
If you work with large amounts of information, then it is better to take into account not absolute indicators, but relative ones. For example, it will be quite difficult for you to correlate your pyramid with the pyramids of cities or countries, the population of which is significantly different from the one you are considering. Therefore, the entire number of inhabitants should be taken as 100, 1000 or 10000. Further, all indicators are multiplied by the real population and divided by the selected number.
