Files compressed using archivers take up much less disk space and can be transferred to another computer much faster than uncompressed files. Multiple files can be grouped into one compressed folder, which simplifies file sharing and allows you to attach just one file to an email message instead of several.

It is necessary

  • - a computer;
  • - archiver program.

Instructions

Step 1

You can zip files for sending by e-mail using standard tools of the Windows operating system. Navigate to the file you want to compress, right-click on the file or folder, select Send, then select Compressed Zip Folder. A new zipped folder will appear on the screen, right-click on it and click "Rename" to change the name of this folder.

Step 2

Go to the official site of the popular Winrar archiver, https://www.rarlab.com/. Download the archiver program there to archive the files. To do this, follow the link https://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar401.exe, wait for the download to finish, run the installation file and install the program. Run the program, in its window you will see a list of folders and files on your computer. Go to the folder where the files prepared for archiving are located. You can navigate through folders in the program window in the same way as in Explorer

Step 3

Select the necessary files with the mouse to create an archive, click the "Add" button on the toolbar or the Alt + A key combination. Next, in the next window, specify a name for the archive that will be created. Select the folder where you want to create the archive. To create a multivolume archive, for example, to compress a large file and send it by e-mail, where there are restrictions on the size of the files, enter the size of the volume in the special field. For example, on the e-mail server from where you are going to send a file, you cannot send files larger than 100 MB. This means that the size of the volume should be specified in this field as 102400 KB. Then the file will be compressed and cut into "pieces" weighing 100 MB each.

Step 4

Protect the archive from possible damage in transit. To do this, add information for recovery, go to the "Advanced" tab, specify the percentage of the archive size that will be occupied by the data for recovery. The value can be set to 3%. To protect the archive from unauthorized access, go to the "Advanced" tab, click the "Set password" button. In the window that appears, enter the password to create a secure archive. Click "OK" to compress the files into an archive. A window with compression statistics will appear, click the "Background Mode" button, and the window will be minimized to tray.
