A firewall is a program or device that checks content coming to a computer from a local network or from the Internet for malware and code. A firewall blocks malicious traffic and can also block connections from programs installed on your computer to the Internet or the public network.

Step 1
A firewall can also prevent viruses from spreading on your network. Thus, one infected computer will not let the virus go further. Disabling the firewall is highly discouraged, especially if you do not have any anti-virus system installed. But sometimes malware can disable the firewall in order to access networks without the permission of the computer's administrator.
In order to turn on the firewall, just go to "My Computer", right-click on an empty spot on the screen and select "Properties" from the context menu. You will see the "System" window containing basic information about the PC. On the left, in a special column, select the link "Control Panel - Home Page" at the very top. You will be taken to the control panel.
Step 2
In the control panel on the right in the "View" setting, set small or large icons and find the item "Windows Firewall", then left-click on it. A firewall will appear on the screen displaying the current activity. If enabled, all indicators will be green. If the readings are yellow or red, turn on your firewall.
Step 3
To do this, in the special panel on the left, click "Turn Windows Firewall on or off" and in the option settings that appear, put the circle icon next to "Turn on Windows Firewall" opposite the private and public network. Also check the boxes next to "Notify me when Windows Firewall blocks a new program" in order to ensure that unwanted software starts automatically. After the done operation, click “OK” at the bottom of the screen.
