To optimize the operation of OS Windows, you must correctly configure the settings of all devices on your computer. Particular attention should be paid to setting up a hard drive or hard drive.

Step 1
You can improve system performance by setting the hard disk to DMA (direct access to random access memory) mode. Call the context menu by right-clicking on the "My Computer" icon and select "Properties". Go to the Hardware tab and click Device Manager. Expand the list of "IDE ATA / ATAPI controllers".

Check the operating mode of each device: call the context menu, activate the "Properties" option and go to the "Additional parameters" tab. Set the "Transfer Mode" parameter to "DMA, if possible".

Defragment your disk to optimize searching and writing files. Right-click on the "My Computer" icon and select the "Manage" command. In the list of "Storage Devices" check the item "Disk Defragmenter". Defragment all logical drives. During this process, you cannot access storage devices.

In Windows XP, system files are written to the hard disk buffer by default, which speeds up access to them. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, this option must be set manually. Right-click on the hard drive icon to bring up the drop-down menu and select the "Properties" item.
Step 5
Go to the "Policy" tab and select the checkbox "Allow write caching to disk". Keep in mind that data can be lost or damaged in the event of a power failure. To improve the reliability of your computer, it is better to use a UPS (uninterruptible power supply).
Step 6
If you have several programs running in the background on your computer, the system slows down significantly. Press Win + R and in the "Open" line enter the msconfig command. Go to the "Startup" tab and uncheck the boxes next to those programs that you use only from time to time. Confirm by clicking OK. Changes will take effect after reboot.
Step 7
By default, the paging file is located on the same logical drive as the system. Constant access to the hard disk for information from virtual memory greatly slows down its work. Click on the icon "My Computer" with the right mouse button and select the command "Properties". Go to the "Advanced" tab and in the "Performance" section click "Options".
Step 8
Again select the "Advanced" tab and click "Change" in the "Virtual memory" section. Mark the disk on which the system is installed, and move the radio button to the "No paging file" position. To confirm your choice, click "Set".
Step 9
If the amount of RAM on your computer is at least 1 Gb, you can do without the paging file altogether. If you need virtual memory, mark a different logical drive and set the size of the paging file. Click "Set" and restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
