Protecting your home wireless network from hacking is one of the most important steps in setting it up. Naturally, few people will like it if someone else uses his internet connection.
Necessary
Wi-Fi router
Instructions
Step 1
You should start preparing security for your wireless network before you create it. Get the right Wi-Fi router. Emphasize the types of encryption it can work with. The point is that the WEP type is easily cracked. Therefore, it is better to purchase equipment that supports the WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK security types.
Step 2
Install the purchased Wi-Fi router in your apartment. Connect it to AC power. Connect this equipment to a laptop or computer via the LAN (Ethernet) port using a network cable.
Step 3
To enter the settings menu of the router, enter the IP address of the equipment into the address bar of the browser. A window with two fields will appear on the screen. Enter your username and password to login. It is advisable to immediately change this data to prevent hacking of the router.
Step 4
When setting up a wireless access point, pay special attention to the password. Remember one simple rule: the more difficult the password you set, the more difficult it is to guess. WPA and WPA2-PSK require a password of at least eight characters. Enter a password that is at least sixteen characters long.
Step 5
It is recommended to use a combination of Latin letters and numbers, and the letters should be entered in a different case. Those. the password format should be something like this: Abcd36SFG25FgG23. Even if attackers use password brute-forcing programs, it will take a huge amount of time for them to brute force your code.
Step 6
Many Wi-Fi routers support the function of checking the MAC addresses of network adapters. Activate it and enter the MAC addresses of those laptops that you plan to connect to the wireless access point.
Step 7
To find out the MAC address of your equipment, press the Win + R keys and type cmd in the field that appears, press the Enter key. The command line will open in front of you. Enter the command ipconfig / all, find your wireless adapter and write down its MAC address.
