Many files, usually custom ones, can be renamed without any problems. But sometimes a situation arises when renaming a file leads to disruptions in the operation of programs or the operating system. In this case, you should restore the original file name.

Step 1
Renaming problems usually arise in two cases: when the original file name is needed by some program or OS, and when its extension is violated. The latter happens when the display of extensions is disabled on the computer.
Step 2
To enable the display of extensions, open any drive or folder, select in the menu "Tools" - "Folder Options" - "View". Uncheck the box next to "Hide extensions for registered file types." Click OK. Now you can see all the file extensions.
Step 3
Remember what extension the renamed file had and restore it. For executable files, this is most often the extension *.exe, for documents - *.doc or *.txt. Photos usually have *.
Step 4
If changing the file name caused a program to stop running, pay attention to the displayed message - it usually contains the name of a file that the program cannot find. Knowing which file was changed, you can easily bring it back to its original form.
Step 5
Important system files usually cannot be renamed or changed, and the operating system prevents this. But they can be changed by booting from another OS or using the Live CD. If the changes made negatively affect the operation of the computer - for example, it refuses to boot at all, you should return the original files in the same way. Remember to make copies of important files before changing them.
Step 6
If you were able to rename or delete some important system files and the OS refuses to work properly, and the original versions of the files are not preserved, try recovering the files from the installation disk. To do this, start the Windows installation, wait until the message appears: "If one of the following copies of Windows XP is damaged, the installer may attempt to repair it."
Step 7
Press R, the process of restoring the original files will begin. Your data will not be affected by this process. After the end of the recovery, restart the computer, the operating system will be restored.
