Step 1

Open an explorer window (you can just open the "My Computer" window) and select "Tools" in the menu bar and then - "Folder Options"

Step 2

In the "Folder Options" dialog box, check the "Show hidden files and folders" option, and then uncheck the "Hide protected system files (Recommended)" checkbox. Click "OK" to confirm your changes. The system will display a warning, in which also click "OK"

Step 3

Insert the Windows XP installation disc into the drive and close any autorun windows that open. In the "My Computer" window, right-click on the drive icon and select "Open" in the context menu that appears. Leave this window open in order to see the contents of the disk.

Step 4

Open My Computer again, but this time navigate to the root directory of your one of your partitions on your computer, where you can temporarily place files from the installation disc that you will eventually merge with Service Pack 3. Then create folder and name it, for example, WinXP, then create another folder called SP3. Then move the entire contents of the Windows XP installation disc to the C: WinXP folder.

Step 5

While copying files from the disk to your computer, copy the Windows XP SP3 offline installer (its standard name is windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu.exe for English) to the C: SP3 directory.

Step 6

Start a command prompt, in which enter the following commands: cd

cd SP3

windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu.exe -x: c: SP3 The file extraction process window will appear.

Step 7

Next, enter the following:

cd i386

cd update

update.exe / integrate: c: winxp The software update installation wizard integrates Service Pack 3 files with the current Windows distribution.
