If there is text in the document that needs additional explanations, then it is marked with a numbered link, by which the corresponding explanation can be found at the bottom of the page. Such explanations are commonly referred to as “footnotes,” as opposed to “endnotes,” which are placed at the end of the document rather than on the current page. The Microsoft Word word processor has built-in tools that make it easy to create both types of footnotes.
Instructions
Step 1
Load the desired document into Word and make sure that the editor is working in "page layout" mode. You can switch to this mode by clicking on the corresponding icon in the lower right corner of the program window.
Step 2
Place the cursor in the place of the document text where you want to place a link to the explanatory text (footnote) and go to the "Links" tab in the word processor menu. In the group of commands "Footnotes" click on the largest button - "Insert footnote". Word will place a numbered link where you specify, create a footer at the bottom of the page, place the same number there, and move the insertion point. You just need to type the text of the explanation, and then return it back to the text to continue typing or indicate the next footnote. Instead of a button on the menu, you can use the alt="Image" + CTRL + F keyboard shortcut to create a regular footnote.
Step 3
If you need to insert an endnote, you should act in much the same way - position the cursor at the end of the piece of text that needs an explanation, and go to the "Footnotes" tab in the menu. The only difference is the button you have to click in the Insert Footnote command group - in this case, it should be the button labeled Insert Endnote. In this case, the editor will not create a header and footer on the last page, but will add a horizontal separator line after the last line - all the endnotes you specify will be placed after it. For the operation of inserting an endnote, there is also a combination of "hot keys" - CTRL + alt="Image" + D.
Step 4
Note that the numbering style for footnotes and endnotes will differ. If ordinary footnotes will be marked with ordinary numbers, then endnotes will be marked with Roman numerals. You can change the numbering styles by clicking the small square icon located to the right of the Footnotes label on the References tab. This will open an additional window containing a set of settings for both endnotes and regular footnotes. Once you've made the changes you want, don't forget to click the Apply button to have Word renumber the existing links according to the changes you made.
