Often, users are not satisfied with the standard desktop design. They want to add an element of personality to make the background image, splash screen, and file and folder icons pleasing to the eye while working on the computer. But newbies who decide to change the design may be faced with the question of how to change the system icons.

Step 1
There are several options for replacing the standard system icons. First, check the Windows themes available on your computer, maybe you like the look of the icons provided for a particular theme. Right-click anywhere on the desktop and select Properties from the context menu. A new "Display Properties" dialog box will open.

Make sure you are on the first tab - Themes. In the section of the same name, use the drop-down list to select a theme from the collection. In the "Sample" section, a new design option will be displayed, you can evaluate the new type of icons and decide whether you like it. Once determined, apply the new settings and close the window. However, changing the Windows theme not only changes the system icons, but also the style of other elements. If you are not satisfied with this, use one of the methods below.

Make sure your collection of custom icons is ready for use: all archives are unpacked, icon files are in a folder you can easily find. Call the "Properties: Display" dialog box in the previously described way or through the control panel ("Start" - "Control Panel" - "Appearances and Themes" - "Display"). Click the "Desktop" tab.
Step 4
At the bottom of the dialog box, click the Customize Desktop button. An additional window "Desktop Elements" will appear. Go to the General tab and find the Desktop Icons section. You will see a field with thumbnails. Select the icon you want to replace with the left mouse button and click the Change Icon button.
Step 5
In the next Change Icon dialog box, click the Browse button and navigate to the directory where the custom icon files are stored. Select the appropriate icon by clicking on it with the left mouse button and click the "Open" button in the dialog box. The standard icon will be replaced with a custom one. Repeat the above steps for each system icon and apply the new settings.
Step 6
If the method seems too complicated for you, you can use one of the programs designed for working with icons, such as IconPhile, IconPackager or CandyBar. Install the application on your computer and follow the instructions provided. As a rule, the interface of such programs is intuitive and does not require any special knowledge from the user.
