The impression of watching a new movie, downloaded from the Internet or purchased on disc, can be spoiled by subtitles appearing at the bottom of the frame.
Subtitles can be useful if the sound quality is so bad that it is impossible to make out the words of the characters, they are simply irreplaceable when learning a foreign language (after all, learning a language from movies is one of the most enjoyable and quickest ways). However, in other cases, they only distract from the perception of the film masterpiece, moreover, obscuring a considerable part of the picture. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to remove subtitles.
This is because subtitles can be superimposed on a video in two main ways. They can be an integral part of the picture, or they can be superimposed on it directly by a player (a computer program or a hardware video player that plays DVD or Blue Ray Disc). In the first, in order to remove subtitles, you will have to process each frame of the video by means similar to the well-known program for processing photographs Adobe Photoshop. Of course, this is an incredibly time-consuming process, besides, the picture quality in the subtitle area will still be significantly deteriorated. To avoid these problems, we can only recommend that when downloading a movie or buying a disc, pay attention to the "hardsub" mark, which means that the video is supplied with "non-removable" subtitles, which are an integral part of the video image.
If the subtitles are simply superimposed on the blank video, then you can simply turn off the subtitles.
- The easiest way to get rid of subtitles is when watching videos on a computer using any software video player. The exact method will depend on what kind of program you use to watch videos on your computer. For example, in the widespread Media Player Classic (comes with the popular k-lite codec pack), when watching a video, right-click on the image, and in the context menu that opens, select Subtitles - Enable by unchecking the box next to this item. Subtitles will disappear. In other programs for viewing video, subtitles can be removed in the same way, using the corresponding menu item.
- You can refuse to view subtitles when using a hardware player using the corresponding button on the remote control or an on-screen menu item (for details, see the instructions for a specific player model).
