To use the TV as an additional laptop monitor, you need a special cable. And in some situations, a set of rather rare adapters may be required.

Step 1
Modern laptops usually have two video channels. These are VGA and HDMI ports. Naturally, it makes more sense to connect your TV to your laptop via the HDMI port, because it is capable of transmitting a digital signal rather than an analog signal. Find the correct ports on your TV.
Step 2
You can use HDMI input or DVI connector. This will preserve the quality of the transmitted signal. Remember that the DVI port does not carry audio, unlike HDMI. Connect the TV to the laptop. Turn on both devices.
Step 3
First, adjust your TV settings. Open its settings menu and go to the "Signal source" item. Select the one you connected to your laptop (DVI or HDMI). Some TV models have two or three HDMI ports. Make sure to select the correct slot number.
Step 4
Now open the Start Menu on your laptop and go to Control Panel. Open the Appearance and Personalization menu. Select "Screen Resolution" located in the "Screen" menu. This method of entering the monitor settings menu is described for Windows Seven.
Step 5
Now click with the left mouse button on the graphic image of the TV or laptop screen and activate the options "Make this monitor the main". Remember that it is on the selected display that applications will be launched first.
Step 6
Now select one of the options for synchronous operation of multiple displays. If you want to use only the TV screen, or if you have connected it to view certain elements in close-up, then select functions. Duplicate Screens. Once activated, both displays will display an identical image. Please note that the resolution of the second screen will be the same as that of the primary display.
Step 7
If you need to use the TV independently of a laptop, then select the "Expand Screen" option.
