The file size can be found using the standard system functions. After determining the amount of memory that a document takes on your computer, you can decide whether to delete it or copy it to removable storage media. Each document has its own size, which can vary depending on the amount of data recorded in it.

Instructions

Step 1

To find out the size of a file or folder, hover over the object with the mouse cursor and hold it for 1 second. A pop-up menu will appear in the window, in which the current file size will be indicated in the "Size" line. Depending on the size of the document, the data will be displayed in bytes, kilobytes, megabytes or gigabytes. If the object is a folder, a short list of documents that are stored in it will be displayed.

Step 2

To get more accurate information about the size of the file, as well as its location in the system and the programs with which it can be opened, you can right-click on it to display a context menu and select the "Properties" option. The lines “Size” and “On disk” will display the size of the document in units of measurement suitable for the file. The number of bytes occupied by the document in the file system will be indicated in brackets.

Step 3

Other programs with which you can find out the file size include special file managers. Thus, Total Commander also provides document data using its own functions. You can also use the Far utility, which is one of the most popular programs for moving, copying and viewing files.

Step 4

If you want to reduce the size of the document for sending by e-mail or storing on a removable storage medium, use an archiving program. To do this, install the WinRAR utility by downloading it from the developer's official website and run the resulting installer.

Step 5

Then right-click on the document and click "Add to Archive …". For maximum reduction of the size in the line "Compression ratio" specify "Maximum". Click "OK" and wait for the archive file to be received, which, in terms of the amount of occupied space, may be significantly less than the original document.
