Line spacing (or "leading") determines the distance between adjacent lines of text. As a rule, the unit of measure for line spacing is the height of the largest letter of the font that is used in this line. That is, if you set a one and a half spacing, then the distance between the lines will increase by half the height of the largest character. It follows from this that by changing the font size, you automatically increase the spacing between lines, although in relative units its value remains the same.

Instructions

Step 1

If you need to change the line spacing in a text document, then for this you can use, for example, a text editor Microsoft Office Word. With the desired document open, select the piece of text that you want to change. If you need to change the leading in the entire document, you can press CTRL + A to select.

Step 2

Click the line spacing icon in the Paragraph group of commands on the Home tab of the text editor menu. In the drop-down list, you can choose one of the six most frequently used options, or click the item "Other options for line options". If you choose the latter, then Word will open the Indents and Spacing tab in a separate window for paragraph settings.

Step 3

Expand the drop-down list under the "line-to-line" label in the "Spacing" section. In this list, the lines "Single", "1, 5 lines" and "Double" duplicate the corresponding items from the six most used options. If you select the line "Multiplier", then in the adjacent field ("value") you can specify any spacing - for example, 11, 49. If you click on the line "Minimum", you will be able to set the line spacing not in relative, but in absolute units (in points). In this case, the leading will cease to depend on the font size - even if you later change it, the line spacing will remain the same as you specified in the "value" field. The "Exactly" item in this drop-down list has a similar purpose.

Step 4

Control visually the changes you make by the picture in the "Sample" window. After the appearance of the sample text takes the form that you need, click the "OK" button.

Step 5

Access to these settings can be obtained without a button in the menu - if you right-click the selected text, then in the drop-down context menu there will be a paragraph "Paragraph" intended for this.
