All major PC devices, as well as removable drives, have their own clear names by which they can be recognized. For example, the vast majority of computers have a system, that is, primary, drive named "Local drive C". This makes it clear to any user who works on a PC that this disk is the main one.

Instructions

Step 1

However, there are situations when a disk or storage device needs to be renamed, and this is not as easy as in the case of files or folders. Therefore, if you need to rename a local or removable drive, but you do not know how to do it, follow the instructions below.

Click on the "Start" button in the main menu and select "Control Panel". In the window that appears, select the "Performance and Maintenance" menu, then "Administrative Tools" and at the end the "Computer Management" tab. If your control panel is presented in a classic form, then select "Administrative Tools" and then "Computer Management".

Step 2

Next, in the window that appears, select the "Disk Management" tab and click the "Actions" tab in the menu bar, in which select the "All Tasks" item and specify your task - "Change the path to the disk or drive letter".

Step 3

In the window that opens for this menu item, click on the "Change" button and in the dialog box that appears, select the letter you want for the drive. Letters can only be Latin. Remember that drive letters cannot be the same for different drives. If you already have an M drive, you cannot designate another drive with the same letter. New letters for drives C and D can only be assigned with administrative rights. If you are unsure of your knowledge of administration, it is best not to rename the primary disks, as this may lead to unwanted changes in the system in the future.

Step 4

If you want to change the default name “Local Disk” to something else, open the “All Tasks” tab in the same “Actions” menu, and then select “Properties”. In the proposed line, enter the name of the device and click the "OK" button.

Step 5

To rename a removable disk, right-click on its icon and select "Properties". The properties window will immediately offer you the "General" tab, in which you must enter the desired name on a separate line. Please be aware that various special characters and signs are not allowed in the name.

As you can see, renaming a disk is not a difficult task. The main thing is not to overdo it with the name for the disk so that other computer users can figure out what's what.
