Sometimes, when you try to open a text file, instead of plain text, you may see a set of incomprehensible characters. This means that, most likely, the original file encoding has been changed. In such a situation, it must be rechecked and, if necessary, changed to the correct one. After that, the text file will be readable again.

Necessary

  • - computer;
  • - the Stirlitz program.

Instructions

Step 1

For further actions you will need the Stirlitz program. The application can be easily found on the Internet. Download it (downloaded in the archive). Unpack the archive to any folder. You do not need to install the program. You can run it directly from the folder.

Step 2

After starting the program, you will find yourself in the main menu. In the upper left corner of the window, click on the "File" command. Then choose the "Open" command. A browse window will appear. In this window, you must specify the path to the file for which you want to know the source encoding. Select the file with the left mouse button. After that, at the bottom of the window, click "Open". The content of the document will appear in the main menu window of the program.

Step 3

Then select the "Edit" component in the program menu. After that, in the additional menu, click on "Decode". The file decoding procedure will begin. As a rule, its duration does not exceed ten seconds. After the operation is completed, readable text should appear in the program window instead of incomprehensible characters. At the top of the program menu there should be information about the encoding of the current file.

Step 4

Now you can save the document in a normal state. To do this, click "File" and select "Save As" in the additional menu. After that, select the folder where you want to save the document.

Step 5

If you need to encode a document in a different format, then this is also quite simple. There is a list of different codes at the top of the toolbar. When the document is decoded, all you need is to select the code and left-click on it. In a few seconds, the encoding of the document will be changed. If incomprehensible symbols appear again, this means that this code does not fit the current document and you should choose another one.
