Necessary

  • Xubuntu 14.04 disk image.
  • Installed VMware Player.
  • 25-30 GB of free disk space for storing the virtual machine.

Instructions

Step 1

Before starting, you should already have downloaded the Xubuntu (or ubuntu) image file in iso format. You can get it on the official website xubuntu.org by clicking on the Download button. The procedure is trivial, so it is beyond the scope of this article, we will assume that you already have the image. Launch VMware Player, for example, by clicking on its icon on the desktop or from the Start menu.

Step 2

On first launch, select Use VMware Player 7 for free for non-commercical use. Enter your e-mail below and click the Continue button.

In the window that opens, click on the Create a New Virtual Machine button.

In the window that opens, select the Installer disk image file (iso) item and click on the Brows button below this field. Find the Xubuntu iso image on your hard disk using the file selection dialog box and click open.

Make sure the path to the iso file is correct and click Next on the New Virtual Machine wizard.

Step 6

The next step is to set the credentials of a user account that will be created in Xubuntu during the installation process. Fullname - full name, for example, Ivan Ivanovich. User name - login name, only Latin characters, no spaces. Password and Confirm - password and confirmation. After you have entered the information in all fields, click Next.

Step 7

In this step, you must specify the name of the virtual machine and the location of the virtual machine data files. Make sure there is enough space on the drive with the specified folder. By default, you need 25-30 GB of free disk space. Click Next to continue.

The next step is to select the parameters of the virtual disk. For informational purposes, the default 20 GB volume is sufficient. For best performance, I recommend setting the switch to Store virtual disk as single file. Then click the Next button.

Step 9

The procedure for pre-configuring the virtual machine is now complete. Click Finish to start the installation.

Step 10

The installation of the Xubuntu operating system in VMware Player will start automatically. At this time, you will be prompted to download and install the VMware Tools for Linux Guest Additions. You must agree and click the Download and Install button.

Step 11

VMware Tools for Linux can be downloaded and installed in parallel with the installation of the Xubuntu guest operating system. Wait for the installation to complete.

Once the installation is complete, you will see the Xubuntu OS login screen. Enter the password for the user created in step 6. Congratulations - the installation is complete.
