Big game companies have found an easy way to make money: breaking the finished game into pieces and selling them piece by piece, calling them addons. At the same time, it is often not even clear how to enable such an addon.

Step 1
Find out the type of addon. If it is official, it will most likely be tightly integrated into the original project. On the other hand, if the add-on is "amateur" in nature, then installing it will take some effort. You may have to manually replace some files and copy them to the game directory, or download installers that will do it for you.
Step 2
Read the information. On the licensed disc with the writing Addon (addition) there will definitely be a hint on how to run it. "Standalone" - the addon does not require an original project or a special installation method. The inscription is translated as "put separately", and means complete independence. On the contrary, the phrase "requires original game" implies that you will not launch the add-on until you buy the first part.
Step 3
Install in the recommended directory. If you are faced with a "plug-in", then during installation you will need to specify the path to the original game. In this case, you can enable the addon either through the shortcut that appears on the desktop, or from the game itself. Then you need to find the "Add-ons" button in the "main menu" and select the one you need.
Step 4
Check out the pre-game utilities. For example, in games from Bethesda ("Oblivion", "Fallout 3"), before launching, you will be asked to determine which add-ons to connect. This is decorated with a small pop-up window, where, having gone to the corresponding menu, you mark with checkboxes which modifications you would like to attach.

Check the game version. Sometimes an addon is designed for a later version of the game than yours. Then it will not only not work, but can also lead to the fact that the program will refuse to start at all. The way out in this case will be the installation of a patch - the official "improvement" of the game. Look for instructions. Most often, modifications are distributed over the Internet, so the downloaded archive should contain a text document that will explain you step by step how to run the addon. The game differs from the game, so it is not always easy for even an experienced player to understand the installation method. If there are no instructions, then look for instructions near the link from which you downloaded the file.
