The file format is its structure, which determines how the file is displayed and stored. Typically indicated at the end of the file name (the part that is separated by a period is usually called an extension). To open any file, you need to know its format. This will allow you to choose the right program.

Instructions
Step 1
Determine the format of the desired file. To do this, right-click on it and select "Properties" in the context menu that opens. Opposite the inscription "File Type" you will see its format.
Step 2
Determine the file type yourself if the system has not done so. As a rule, this happens with files that have a not very common extension. To do this, you can use a search engine or go directly to the site where file extensions are described. There are also special programs such as Know Extension Pro. It determines the type of files by extension.
Step 3
Choose a program that can open this file. If it is a picture, video or audio file, try using the players already installed on your computer.
Step 4
If the system cannot open the file with the available software, search for the appropriate program on the Internet. To do this, type in any search engine "how to open file xxx" or "player for xxx format".
Step 5
Follow one of the links and download the program.
Step 6
Install the software on your computer and open the file.
