A floppy disk drive is rare in a modern computer. However, many users do not have the newest computers, or they have a built-in drive of this type "just in case". It is believed that these storage media are outdated for a long time, but in some situations it is necessary to boot from a floppy disk. Also, there are times when some operations are possible only with the help of floppy disks.
Instructions
Step 1
First you need to create a bootable floppy disk. Insert the floppy disk into the floppy drive. Open "My Computer" and right-click on the drive icon, usually the letter "A:". Select the "Format" line. At the bottom of the format window, check the box next to "Create MS-DOS bootable disk". Wait for the end of the operation. You will receive a floppy disk with the files required to boot the basic MS-DOS operating system. If your PC won't boot, you can create a bootable floppy disk on any other computer.
Step 2
Reboot your computer. Without waiting for the system to boot, immediately press the "Del" key to enter BIOS - the main system of computer settings. Depending on the motherboard and BIOS version, the names of the menu items and the way to open the BIOS will be different. Try pressing F2 or F10.
Step 3
Find an item in the menu called "Boot-up Sequence". Use the arrow keys and Enter to navigate between the settings. When you find the menu you want, enter it by pressing "Enter". You will see a list of bootable devices with entries such as CD-ROM, Removable Device, Hard Drive, and others. Enter the boot device selection menu, press the "+" or "-" key to install the device you need (in this case it is a floppy disk - Floppy, Floppy Drive) so that the required line is at the very top of the list.
Step 4
Save your selection. To do this, press the F10 key - then all changes will be saved, and the computer will automatically restart. After the reboot, if the diskette is in the drive, you will see a command prompt.
Step 5
Some BIOS versions allow quick selection of the device to boot. Press the F8 key several times immediately after restarting your computer. Insert the prepared floppy disk into the floppy drive. When a window with the title “Choose Boot Device” appears, use the arrows to navigate through the menu to choose to boot from a floppy disk.
