The file name consists of the full path to it on the hard drive, personal name and extension, usually indicated after the dot sign. If you have somehow removed the extension, then the operating system cannot automatically recognize the type of document and run it for execution in the corresponding program. The first step is to find out what type of file it belongs to.

Instructions
Step 1
Download and install one of the TrID file analysis programs, FileInfo, File Analyzer and others from the Internet. You can find it on the software website softodrom.ru or soft.ru. Use the program's features to find out the file type. If you are using TrID, it will display information about the possible file type as a percentage.
Step 2
View the detailed binary data content in a regular notepad. At the beginning is the file signature - a special set of characters with information about the document. For example, for a RAR archive, the signature contains Rar characters. You can find out in detail the correspondence of signatures to file types via the Internet. You can also find out the extension of the document using the standard tools of the operating system. To do this, right-click on the file and select "Properties". A window will appear in front of you, in which all the relevant information will be presented.
Step 3
Use online file recognition services. It is possible to check their type directly on the Internet with the same TrID program. Having found out the file type, add its full extension, simply changing the name of a specific document. Click on the file with the right mouse button and select "Rename" from the menu. Enter the extension without forgetting the dot sign.
Step 4
You shouldn't just remove the file extension. You will easily forget the type of document, and the operating system will not automatically recognize the data and will not select the program to run. Take a close look at the extension of each file that is on your personal computer. In general, we can say that it is not so difficult to return the extension to any document, the main thing is to have the appropriate software.
