In operating systems of the Windows family, the ability to view and retrieve information from the folders of remote machines that are open for public access is implemented. Each time to download information from a remote resource, you must enter the path to it and, possibly, data for authorization. It is much more convenient to mount a network drive specifying a remote resource as the data source.

Step 1
Using the graphical shell, open the "My Computer" window. To do this, find a shortcut with the appropriate name on the desktop. Click on it once or twice (depending on the current settings for activating shortcuts) with the left mouse button. Or right-click on the shortcut and select the "Open" item in the context menu that appears.
Step 2
Open the network drive mapping dialog. To do this, click on the "Service" item in the "My Computer" window menu. Then select "Map network drive …".
Step 3
Select the letter that will be the identifier of the mounted network resource in the system. In the "Map Network Drive" dialog, click on the "Drive" drop-down list. Select the item corresponding to your preferred letter.
Step 4
Specify the path to the network share that will be mounted as a disk. If you know the full path to the share on the remote computer, enter it in the Folder text box. The path is entered in the form: / machine_name / resource_name, where machine_name is the IP address or symbolic name of a computer in the local network, and resource_name is the name of one of the folders on it that are open for public access.
If you do not know the path to the network folder, click the Browse button next to the Folder field. In the "Browse for folders" dialog, expand the "Entire network" and "Microsoft Windows Network" nodes. Find the site corresponding to the workgroup or domain in which the target computer is located. Open it up. Expand the node with the name of the computer on which the network resource is located. Highlight it in the list of shared resources on your computer. Click OK.
Step 5
Mount the network drive. In the "Map Network Drive" dialog box, check the "Recover at logon" box to automatically mount the drive every time the OS starts. Click the Finish button.
If authorization is required to access a remote folder, a dialog with fields for entering a username and password will appear. Enter the required information. Click OK.
Step 6
Check for the mounted network share in the list of drives on your computer. Switch to the “My Computer” window opened in the first step. Review the "Network Drives" section. Make sure the mounted resource is there.
