The file name is part of its address, that is, the location in the computer and folder. It must be unique for a given folder and its format, that is, in the same directory there cannot be a file with the same extension and the same name. For convenience, files are given names that characterize their contents. You can change the file name at any time while the file is not open for viewing or editing.
Instructions
Step 1
Make sure the file is not open. To do this, you can check the desktop panel (on the screen below) or turn on the Task Manager. The dispatcher is enabled by simultaneous pressing of the “Ctrl-Alt-Delete” keys. The Applications tab should not contain the name of the file you want to rename. If the file is open, select it by pressing the cursor and the "End task" button.
If this is closed, all data entered in the file will be lost. If you want to save them, exit the Manager without any changes and close the file in the usual way (by clicking on the cross in the upper right corner or by pressing “Alt-F4”.
Step 2
Open the folder containing the file. Highlight it by pressing the cursor or using the arrow key (according to its position in the folder). Press the F2 key on the top row of your keyboard. The file name field will become available for editing.
Enter a new name. Do not use punctuation marks: period, quotation marks, colon, slash and backslash, semicolon and a number of others. Their printing will be automatically blocked, as it prevents the computer from determining the file directory. Do not use names assigned to another file of the same type.
Step 3
Instead of the F2 key, you can double-click the file name (NOT the icon or thumbnail). When the field is activated and available for editing, enter a new name in accordance with the requirements outlined in the previous paragraph.
