Step 1
During the development of the Windows 3.1 operating system, the AVI container was born, in fact, it is still alive, but it has always been considered a bad help for the best quality of the movie being watched. This container is proprietary software and operates on the principle of a one-layer file: audio is recorded after the video.
Step 2
The new MKV container was developed and created by domestic manufacturers, in the hope that it will be relevant for several years to come. The essence of the container is simple - to accommodate information in several streams, this allows you to significantly reduce the file size with the same quality as AVI.

As a rule, to view a movie of this format, you need to install a standard set of codecs, but some media players can do this without additional equipment, for example, Kmplayer. All necessary codecs are already built into the distribution kit of this utility.
Step 4
If you are used to watching video files using other programs, it makes sense to download one of the five distributions from the official website. To do this, go to the following link https://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm and select any assembly by clicking the Download button.
Step 5
After downloading the installation package, launch it by double-clicking on it with the left mouse button. In the window that opens for selecting the installed codecs, uncheck the Media Player Classic item if you do not use it. Then check the box next to DirectShow and select the following options: XviD category - latest XviD version, DivX category - select latest version, H264 category - select ffdshow.
Step 6
For MPEG and MPEG2, select the Cyberlink and Main Concept options. If they are already set and inactive, check the box for System Default. Leave the following options as they are: DirectShow audio, Other Audio, and VFW. Most likely, you will not be using the tools from this package, so uncheck Tools.
Step 7
Click Next, then Finish. Now you can start the video player and check the functionality of the installed codecs.
