When using multiple operating systems or hard drives, sometimes there are boot sector mismatch problems. This is usually caused by the fact that the files required to boot the OS are located on a different partition or disk.
Necessary
Windows installation disc
Instructions
Step 1
This problem can occur when working with different operating systems. When installing Windows XP, boot files are usually copied to the C drive, even if the OS itself is installed on a different partition. Windows Seven and Vista create a separate disk partition that houses the boot sector.
Step 2
To solve the problem, insert the installation disc for the desired operating system into the DVD drive and restart the computer. Hold down the F8 key and select Internal DVD-Rom. Confirm the launch of the installation disc program. If you are using Windows 7, open the Advanced Recovery Options menu and select Startup Repair. The program will automatically create a new boot sector and place the required files on the desired disk partition.
Step 3
If you are using Windows XP, then open the Recovery Console. To do this, select the "Restore" item by pressing the R key in the corresponding menu. Wait for the Windows command prompt to open.
Step 4
Specify the number of the operating system with which files you will work, and press the Enter key. Enter the fixboot command. When the warning line appears, press Y and Enter. After completing the creation of the new boot sector, enter the exit command and restart the computer.
Step 5
In some cases, it is impossible to create a boot sector on a specific partition. This is due to the fact that this section is not active or main. In this case, enter the following commands in the recovery console sequentially: DiskpartList diskSelect disk XSlect partition 1ActiveExit.
Step 6
After creating the active partition, follow the steps described in the fourth step. After successfully loading the desired operating system, enable the launch of the OS selection menu. This will allow you to quickly select the system you want to boot at the moment.
