One day, turning on your PC, you may receive a message that the operating system cannot boot. This does not always mean a hard drive failure. Sometimes, this is a sign that the boot sector of the logical disk is damaged. Many people would prefer to contact a specialist, but you can restore your computer to a working state on your own using the built-in System Restore Console.

Instructions

Step 1

Set boot from CD-ROM in BIOS. Insert a bootable disk that contains an operating system into your floppy drive. Save BIOS settings and restart your computer. After rebooting, the "Install Windows XP" menu appears, select the line that mentions system recovery. Press "R" on your keyboard. After clicking you will see the following: “1: C: WINDOWS. Which copy of Windows should you sign in to? " Press the number "1" on the keyboard, then press the "Enter" key.

Step 2

Enter the password for the administrator account, if the “Administrator” account does not have a password, then press the “Enter” key. The system prompts you to enter a command, enter "fixboot" from the keyboard and press "Enter". After that, you will see a message like: "Do you want to write a new boot sector to the C: partition". Press "Y" which means "yes" to confirm the operation. After clicking, a message appears about the successful rewriting of the boot sector.

Step 3

You will see "C: WINDOWS>" on the monitor. After the ">" sign, enter the "fixmbr" command from the keyboard. After entering the command, press "Enter". A warning will appear on the screen stating that using the "fixmbr" utility it is possible to break the partition table. You can abort the operation or confirm the write of the "MBR" boot sector. Confirm the entry by pressing the "Y" key. A message will then appear stating that the master record was successful.

Step 4

The monitor will prompt you to enter "C: WINDOWS>", then enter the command "exit", press "Enter".

Step 5

During reboot press "Del" key and enter BIOS setup. In the settings, choose to boot from the hard drive, save the settings and reboot. After the reboot, the operating system will start normally. If this happens, then you have restored the boot sector and disk write. If this problem reappears, consult with a specialist and get ready for the prospect of buying a new hard drive. Remember that restoring the boot record and sector carries the risk of losing all of your data. But, unfortunately, one cannot completely insure against this.
