The safe mode of the operating system is used when it is necessary to determine the reasons for the malfunctioning of the system, replace any of the system device drivers, edit the Windows registry, etc. You can select the option of limiting the functionality of the OS in safe mode, which is necessary for solving a specific task, by calling the corresponding menu during the computer boot process.

Instructions

Step 1

Initiate the reboot procedure by selecting “Shut down” in the main menu on the Start button. In the window that appears, click the "Restart computer" option. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, immediately select the restart command from the drop-down list in the menu.

Step 2

Wait for Windows to finish unloading and start a new boot of the system. The screen will sequentially display information about the manufacturer, information about the BIOS settings, about checking memory chips, etc. After all the checks are completed, the screen will clear and at this moment you need to have time to press the F8 function key in the top row of keyboard buttons. Depending on your BIOS version and OS boot loader settings, you may be prompted to press this key at the bottom of the display. In the operating system itself, it is possible to change the boot protocol so that stopping at this stage is mandatory and the waiting time specified in the settings for a key press lasts.

Step 3

Select one of the Safe Mode options from the list of menu items. At this stage of the download, you will not be able to use the mouse because its driver has not yet been loaded. Navigate the menu lines using the navigation keys (up and down arrows). You can also use the numeric keypad buttons if the NUM LOCK mode is enabled. Selecting the "Safe Mode" line will load only the drivers for basic devices (keyboard, basic video adapter, mouse, monitor, disks) and basic system services. The use of network connections in this option of limiting functionality will be impossible. To add network drivers and services to the basic set of software, select another line in the menu - "Safe mode with loading network drivers". If there is a need to disable the Windows graphical interface, select the item "Safe Mode with Command Line Support."

Step 4

Press the Enter button after you have made the choice of the safe mode option, and the boot will continue in the mode of limiting the system functionality you specified.
