Users often need to copy a program in Windows XP. This can be done in several ways. This does not delete the original file, which greatly simplifies the work on the computer.

Instructions

Step 1

Click the "Start" button and then "My Computer". Find the hard drive, network drive, or other storage device where the folder with the files you want is located, and double-click to open the contents of the drive. Scroll down the list of all files until you find the files you want to use. If you plan to move files you recently downloaded from the Internet to another folder or disk, check My Documents and your desktop to find them. Many of the downloaded programs are in a compressed format, so you may need a program to decompress.

Step 2

Highlight the file you want to copy by clicking on it once. Don't open it. To copy more than one file or folder, hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard and select any of them in order to copy and move. Now press the C key when the selection is complete. All selected files and folders will be copied.

Step 3

Open the folder where you want to move the files, choose Edit and then Paste from the menu at the top of the window. If the folder where you want to place the application does not already exist, use the Create New Folder button to do so. This way, any files that you selected in the previous step will be sent to the selected folder. The original program will remain unchanged and an exact copy will appear in the specified location. If you no longer need the previous copy of the application, you can easily send the selected folder to the "Trash".
