Each hard disk partition is assigned a specific letter by the operating system. But this does not mean that it cannot be changed. For example, you need to connect another hard drive, and in order to avoid confusion, you want to assign new letters to some partitions. If there is a C partition on two hard disks, then, accordingly, it must be renamed on one of the hard drives.
Necessary
- - Computer with Windows OS;
- - Norton PartitionMagic 8.0.
Instructions
Step 1
The first way to rename partition C is to use standard operating system tools. Click Start. Select "All Programs" and go to "Accessories". Select Command Prompt in standard programs. Run this tool. In the Command Prompt window that appears, enter Compmgmt.msc.
Step 2
The Computer Management window opens. On its right side there is a line "Storage devices". Click on this line with a double left click of the mouse. In the next window, also double-click on the "Disk Management" line. A window will pop up in which there will be a list of hard disk partitions.
Step 3
Click on the C drive with the right mouse button and select "Change drive letter or drive path" in the context menu. Another window will appear in which you should select "Change". In the next window, click on the arrow located in the upper right corner.
Step 4
A list of letters will appear, in which select a new one. If your C drive is the system drive, then you will see a notification that some programs that use this letter may stop working after renaming, so keep this in mind. Click Yes. After that, the drive letter will be changed.
Step 5
It should also be borne in mind that in some cases it is impossible to change the C drive, if it is a system drive, using standard operating system tools. In such a situation, you will need additional software. Download Norton PartitionMagic 8.0 from the Internet. Install it on your computer hard drive. Run the program.
Step 6
After its launch, the main menu will contain a list of hard disk partitions. Click on section C with the right mouse button. Then move the cursor over the line "Additional". Several more context menu options will appear, among which select Change Drive Letter. Then click on the arrow and in the list of letters select the one you need. Click OK. Close the program. When you close it, you will be prompted to change the settings. Accept it and restart your PC.
