The computer name is selected by the user during system installation and can be changed at any time. It is necessary to identify a computer on the network and cannot contain more than fifteen printable characters, spaces, and special characters such as punctuation marks. If you need the full computer name, refer to the system components.
Instructions
Step 1
Click the Start button or the Windows key on your keyboard. Select "Control Panel" from the menu. In the Performance and Maintenance category, left-click on the System icon. The System Properties component opens. If the control panel has a classic look, select the desired icon right away.
Step 2
There are several other ways to call the System Properties component. Open the "Start" menu and find "My Computer". Click on it with the right mouse button and select the last item "Properties" from the context menu. The same can be done from the desktop by selecting the item "My Computer".
Step 3
In the System Properties window, go to the Computer Name tab. In the field "Full name" you will see the name that is assigned to the computer and is used at the current time. To change the name, on the same tab, click the Change button. An additional window "Change computer name" will open.
Step 4
When choosing a new name, remember that the shorter it is, the better. In addition, you cannot give a computer a name that is already in use on the network. This can lead to conflicts in network communication. After entering a new name, click on the OK button and apply the new settings.
Step 5
You can also find the full computer name by using the System Information component. To invoke it, click the "Start" button and select "Run" from the menu. Type msinfo32.exe in the empty line of the window that opens and press the Enter key or the OK button.
Step 6
A new dialog box will open. Use the mouse to highlight the "System Information" line on the left side of the window. Find in the "Element" group on the right side of the window the item "System Name". The "Value" group will contain the name of the computer. The Username line also contains information about the computer name. The entry might look like [computer name] / User account.
