The last actions of users on the computer, system events and all attempts to log on to the system are recorded by the Windows XP operating system in the event logs. The logs are divided into an application log, which contains records of installed programs, a security log that stores information about file editing, and a system log that shows boot problems.

Instructions
Step 1
Use the "Start" button to bring up the main menu of the system and go to the "Control Panel" item to view the event logs.
Step 2
Select "Performance and Maintenance" and select "Administration".
Step 3
Expand the Computer Management link and point to the Event Viewer section in the console list to display all events.
Step 4
Specify the log containing the required event and double-click on the selected object in the console list to view the details of the required event. This action will open the properties dialog box for the selected event, which stores information about the event name and description.

Specify the "Find" item in the "View" menu of the upper toolbar of the application window and enter the required characteristics of the required event to search for a specific event.
Step 6
Click the "Find Next" button to initiate the search.

Select the "Filter" item in the "View" menu of the upper toolbar of the application window and enter the required filtering characteristics to perform a search by the specified parameters.

Press the OK button to confirm the execution of the command and open the context menu of the required log to determine the size of the selected log.

Specify the desired size in the "Maximum Log Size" field in the "Log Size" section and enter the desired overwrite option in the "When the maximum log size is reached" section.

Use the Clear Log button to delete all entries in the selected event log.

Click OK to apply the selected changes and return to the context menu of the required log to create an archive of information about events.

Select the "Save log file as" item and enter the file name and location in the corresponding fields of the dialog box that opens.

Select one of the three suggested save formats - log file, test file, or comma delimited text file - in the Save as type field and click the Save button to execute the command.
