Before connecting to a Wi-Fi hotspot such as a coffee shop, double check your computer's security settings. Public Wi-Fi networks work in the same way as home or office networks. This means that other users of these networks can see your shared files or folders. In order to protect your data from unauthorized persons, you need to take some security measures.

Step 1
Shared files.
A Windows computer has a default shared folder called Shared Documents. Files stored in this folder are available to other users over the network, which is convenient for sharing information. In the office, such a network is usually called a "workgroup", at home it is called a "homegroup". In both cases, the files in the shared folder are automatically made available to others. If you select a specific type of network when connecting to a public Wi-Fi network, other people on the same network can see your files in the shared folder using their Windows File Explorer computers.
Step 2
Files outside the shared folder.
No one can see files that are not in the shared folder while you are connecting to Wi-Fi. Only those files or folders that you choose to share with others can be transferred over the network.
Step 3
Sharing files and folders.
You can share any files with your team or homegroup members at the folder level. Right click on any file or folder to select the "Share" option. At the folders. shared over the network have a small hand icon below them. right-click on a file or folder and select "Sharing" or "Stop Sharing" if you want to turn off sharing for a specific folder.
