Instructions
Step 1
To disable the function of automatic check and installation of updates on a computer running Windows XP, open the main menu by clicking the "Start" button and go to the "Control Panel" item. Expand the System link and select the Automatic Updates tab in the dialog box that opens. Apply the checkbox in the line "Disable automatic updates" and save the change by clicking OK. Reboot the system to apply the change (for Windows XP).
Step 2
Call the main system menu of Windows version 7 by clicking the "Start" button and go to the "Control Panel" item. Expand the Windows Update link and expand the Configure Settings node in the left pane of the dialog that opens. Check the box next to "Don't check for updates" and check the box next to "Receive recommended updates in the same way as important updates." Save your changes by clicking OK (for Windows version 7).
Step 3
Use an alternative method to disable checking and automatically install system updates. To do this, call the context menu of the "My Computer" desktop element by right-clicking and selecting the "Control" item. Expand the Services and Applications link in the list in the left pane of the dialog box that opens, and expand the Services node.
Step 4
Open the link "Windows Update 7" in the right area of the next dialog box by double-clicking and select the "Disabled" option in the drop-down menu of the "Startup type" line of the dialog box that opens. Click the "Stop" button in the "Status" section and save the changes made by clicking the "Apply" button. Confirm the execution of the selected action by clicking the OK button. This action will disable the selected system update feature (for Windows version 7).
