Any processor cooler has its own lifespan. Although the service life of the coolers is considerable, sooner or later it may fail. In this case, you will need to replace the old cooler with a new one. The process of replacing the cooler is not difficult, although it can be a bit lengthy. Even a beginner can install a new cooler.

Instructions

Step 1

First of all, remove the old cooler from the system unit. Please note that you do not need to remove the cooler itself, but the radiator to which it is attached. Take a close look at the processor heat sink system. As a rule, the heatsink is attached to the motherboard with special fasteners and a few screws. The fasteners can be removed with a special lever. After removing the radiator fasteners, remove all screws. Then disconnect the cooler power cable from the socket and remove the heatsink with the cooler from the system unit.

Step 2

For each motherboard model, separate types of coolers are suitable. To choose the right cooler, you need to know the socket type (processor connection interface) of the motherboard. The socket type can be written directly on the motherboard. Rewrite it. If it is not specified, then the motherboard model should be written on it in any case. Record the motherboard model, go to the manufacturer's website and record the socket of that model.

Step 3

The next step is to buy a new cooler. Go to a computer store and ask what coolers they have for your socket. Choose a cooler according to your socket type. Find out if there is thermal paste included with the cooler. If not, buy it separately.

Step 4

Now you can install a new cooler. Wipe off the old, dried layer of thermal paste from the processor. If the layer of thermal paste is difficult to remove, you can use a damp cloth. Now gently apply a new thin layer of thermal paste to the processor. The kit should include a special spoon for its application. If it is not there, use the means at hand.

Step 5

Install a new heat sink to the processor. Secure the fasteners. Tighten the screws if necessary. Some models of radiators are fixed only with latches, you do not need to tighten the screws for them. Connect the cooler's power cable to the socket next to the processor. The new heatsink with cooler is now installed.
