A fiber optic cable is a plastic or glass strand that carries light inside. It is used to transmit digital information over long distances at high speed. In order to connect the fiber to the equipment, it is necessary to resort to special methods.
It is necessary
- - splice;
- - lint-free napkin;
- - alcohol;
- - cleaver;
- - special welding machine;
- - optical tester.
Instructions
Step 1
For a mechanical connection, a splice is required, into the body of which the cleaved ends of optical fibers are inserted through the channels. First of all, they must be cleaned and degreased. Remove the casing with a buffer layer stripper. Dampen a lint-free cloth with alcohol and degrease the ends of the fibers with it. Then split the end of the fiber at a 90 ° angle using a special tool - a cleaver.
Step 2
Insert the finished ends through the lateral channels of the splice from different sides into the chamber, which is filled with immersion gel. Insert the fibers until they come into contact. The splice cover, after closing, will securely hold the joint. Install the assembled splice on the splice plate of the cross or coupler together with the technological supply of fiber. Check the quality of the connection with an OTDR or optical tester.
Step 3
Another method of connecting optical fibers is welding. For it, you need a special apparatus containing a microscope, clamps, arc welding, a microprocessor and a shrink chamber. Prepare the ends of the fibers for splicing in the same way as you prepared them for mechanical splicing, removing the sheathing from them. Place a shrink sleeve on one end to protect the weld. Then, as indicated in the first step, degrease and chip the ends.
Step 4
Place the fibers in the splicer to align them. The automatic device adjusts the fibers, evaluates the chip and, having received confirmation from the operator, will weld. If the device does not have these functions, these operations must be performed manually. Evaluate the quality of welding with an optical reflectometer. This device will reveal the degree of attenuation and non-uniformity. Slide the thermowell over the weld and place it in the shrink oven for a minute. When the sleeve has cooled down, place it in the splice shield of the cross or sleeve together with the technological supply of fiber.
